EEDA Miscellany

Enthusiastic_Encouragement_and_Dubious_Advice_Newsletter_New_Header_with_purple_hair.png

Hi friends! In case you missed it, I sent out a special issue of this newsletter earlier this week. Please be sure to read that to get caught up. Something that is new is that in order to access the archives, you now need to sign in with an email address. You can still access the free content for $free.99 but you will need to sign in with an email. If you even want more details about the changes to this newsletter and the podcast, check out this week’s episode of EEDA Pod, Filling the Cup Differently: EEDA's Next Chapter. You can find the show on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever else you get your podcasts. Highly recommend also joining us over on Patreon, where we plan on being more active.

What now?

This space is now going to be a medley of links and info like what I’ve been up to, what I’m reading, and as always, links to things that I think you might find useful.

What have I been up to?

  • This week was one of my All the Books! episodes

  • I spoke to a bunch of high school students about what I do for work and what I wish someone had told me when I was their age. I also reconnected with some old friends.

  • I went with friends to see Chaka Khan! It was the first of a series called “Conversations in Music” and she told stories and sang some songs and it was chaotic and wonderful.

Recent & Current Reads

I’m only going to list books here that I actually recommend you read. It’s not going to be an exhaustive list of everything I’ve been reading because that will get out of control very quickly.

  • Art Cure: The Science of How the Arts Save Lives by Daisy Fancourt

  • Don't Call It Art: 10 Ways to Create Like a Kid Again by Austin Kleon (out 6/2)

  • Bromantasy by Máire Roche (out 5/26)

  • On Witness and Respair: Essays by Jesmyn Ward

  • The Year's Best Sports Writing 2025 edited by Hanif Abdurraqib (I’m absolutely obsessed with this collection)

  • Body Electric: The Hidden Health Costs of the Digital Age and New Science to Reclaim Your Well-Being by Manoush Zomorodi (careful, this one might change your life)

  • Yesteryear: A Novel by Caro Claire Burke

Link-O-Rama

  • How to Cut Your Food Bill via NPR. Oh, we in a RECESSION recession.

  • Your Name in Landsat via NASA. It will not do curse words (I tried), but I did get it to do ‘butts.’

  • Tool for planning meetings or online events across time zones. Fucking brilliant!

  • You can watch MTV. Right Now. As it was. I’m trying not to get obsessed with this.

  • Postmark rules have changed. Experts say vote early or use a drop box. This article is California-focused but I believe it applies to a number of other states as well.

  • Oh Google. brb, gonna see if I can find a set of the Encyclopaedia Britannica on eBay.

It’s showtime, Synergy!

That’s it for this week! You can shop many books I’ve mentioned in this newsletter at my affiliate shop, The Infophile’s Bookshop, and support independent bookstores. In fact, any Bookshop, Amazon, or Etsy links in this newsletter are affiliate links so if you shop through those, it helps support my work. Or you can leave me a tip on Ko-fi, Paypal, or Venmo.

If you want to send me some snail mail, you can find me at P.O. Box 21481, Oakland, CA 94620-1481.

You can find our podcast, Enthusiastic Encouragement & Dubious Advice on Apple Podcasts, YouTube, Spotify, and wherever else you get your podcasts.
