Volume 2, Resources 18: Texas, Hurricane Ida, and Anti-Racism Daily
Hi friends! It’s September and just under two months until Halloween. I check this Halloween Countdown frequently because it brings me joy. As does this artwork by Alef Vernon:
It’s a resource week, so let’s get to it!
Resources #1: Texas aka The Canary in the Coal Mine
If you consider yourself an ally to marginalized folks, then you should be angry about the Texas abortion ban, which mostly hurts those groups who are already under-resourced, marginalized, and historically excluded. Here is a Twitter thread on how to give to some folks on the front line. Here’s a Tweet of providers and resources. Plan C is a nonprofit directory of how people are accessing safe home abortion: https://tinyurl.com/makeyourownchoices.
People will not stop having abortions. Laws like this make it so that they will just not be safe or legal abortions.
Resources #2: Hurricane Ida Relief
There’s a resource round-up from Time and another from USA Today that I will not link here because there are certain orgs on their list I don’t support. I did find this resource list from Scalawag, a “POC-led, women-run, nonprofit Southern media org. Disrupting dominant narratives with journalism & storytelling in pursuit of justice & liberation across the South.”
I also want to share this Instagram post of mutual aid networks offering Hurricane Ida Relief:
Resource #3: Anti-Racism Daily
Anti-Racism Daily is a daily, free newsletter. From their site, “Each day, we offer an overview on current events and apply an anti-racism lens. Learn how practices embedded in our politics, criminal justice system, and workplaces enforce systemic oppression – and what you can do about it.” There are usually 3-4 different sections in each newsletter:
Take Action
Get Educated
Key Takeaways
Related Issues (occasionally)
Getting the newsletter daily can be overwhelming if you already have a crowded inbox, but thankfully, you can also access the Anti-Racism Daily archives. Speaking of which, just yesterday their newsletter was on Protecting Abortion Rights. It gives a great, easy-to-understand overview as well as why this is important and how it affects marginalized folks the most.
Before I go, I wanted to share this bit of joy that happened during the Tokyo Olympics in case you didn’t see it. These two Olympians had basically tied for the high jump and were going to discuss a “jump off” to determine a winner but then one of them had the most amazing idea. It’s a reminder that we can all be great. I can’t embed the video, but you can watch this absolutely wonderful and adorable two minutes here.
That’s it for this week!
If you enjoy this free newsletter, here’s how you can show your support!
That’s it for this week! You can shop many books I’ve mentioned in this newsletter at my affiliate shop, The Infophile’s Bookshop, and support independent bookstores. If you want to send me some snail mail, you can find me at P.O. Box 21481, Oakland, CA 94620-1481.
