Volume 3, Resources 11: Rainbow-Washing and DIY Self-Care Toolbox
This is a public issue of Enthusiastic Encouragement & Dubious Advice. Feel free to share it!
Hi friends, happy Pride month! We were cat sitting recently and honestly, that little furball was the only thing that has been keeping me from a complete meltdown. She was mad we were leaving one day so she went to pout in her little cardboard taco truck. Me too, kitty. Me too.
ID: Photo of a fluffy grey and white cat sitting in a blue cardboard taco truck. Above her on the truck it says, “Meow Delicioso!”
It’s a resource week so let’s get to it!
Resource #1: The Rainbow-Washing of Pride via ARD
As I mentioned, it’s LGBTQIA+ Pride month and if you haven’t noticed already, a LOT of corporations are slapping rainbows on their products, raising the prices, and pretending to support the queer community. This is referred to as “rainbow-washing” and you can learn about it (and how to respond to it) in this post from Anti-Racism Daily.
Bonus: Check out @P4mativePride on Twitter which is a bot that “tweets campaign contributions to Florida state senators who voted for the #DontSayGay bill from brands tweeting about #Pride.” Disney is getting dragged A LOT and I am here for it.
Resource #2: Self-care in times of distress: Create your own “self-care toolbox” by Michelle Mijung Kim
One of my earliest newsletter issues was “Volume 1, Issue 5: Prepping for Meltdowns” and it has a similar vibe to Self-care in times of distress: Create your own “self-care toolbox” by Michelle Mijung Kim. Michelle Mijung Kim is the author of The Wake Up: Closing the Gap Between Good Intentions and Real Change, which I have recommended in a past resource issue.
The article for Resource #2 is from 2017 and because there is a pandemic, some of it isn’t necessarily advisable but I still find much of the article relevant and I appreciate it.
