EEDA Newsletter Vol 6, Res 9: Deleting DNA Data & Managing Burnout
This is a public issue of Enthusiastic Encouragement & Dubious Advice. Feel free to share it!
Hi friends! My birthday is on Tuesday and I have so much birthday stuff going on that I’m short on time for writing this newsletter. I will say that I took down my Amazon wishlist as part of my divesting from that site so hooray!
It’s a resource week so let’s get to it!
Resource 1: How to Delete Your 23andMe Data via the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)
If you are one of the millions of folks who used 23andMe, I highly recommend deleting your data. I also highly recommend not giving your DNA to companies but if you did, you should really delete it.
If you used some other company, honestly, I still recommend deleting your DNA data. Here’s how to delete it from Ancestry. And how to delete DNA data from MyHeritage. And LivingDNA. According to the genealogy subreddit, a commenter for Family Tree DNA says, “You have to email them. They will try to talk you out of it, but be persistent. It'll be removed, permanently, but it may take thirty days.” For Nebula Genomics, you may already be s.o.l.
Resource 2: Burnout: Catching the Flame Before it Burns Out via Therapy for Black Girls
If you’ve been here a while or listen to EEDA Pod, you’ll know my thoughts about burnout and how it’s not your fault. That being said, I know some readers might find this article from Therapy for Black Girls useful. And yes, there’s a bit of advice here for everyone.
Resource 3 (for CA Residents): California State Library Virtual Bookshelf
Every Californian with an email address and an internet connection can now visit California’s Bookshelf and access more than 300,000 eBooks and eAudiobooks. Previously, readers had to log in through a participating library to get to all the ebooks available on the eBookshelf. With California’s Bookshelf, access to our vast collection is just a few clicks away.
